Mogadishu, (insidesomalia.org) Abdifitah Mohamed Ibrahim became on Sunday officially the new governor of Bay region after defeating other candidate running for the post, said government official.
The new governor known before as a well-known journalist in Bay region and media administrator, being the executive director of Radio Warsan, the first independent radio station in Bay and Bakol region said after he was elected as the governor of Bay region that his administration will put emphasis on the security and development of the region.
Also, Mr. Hassan Moalin Ahmed 'Piccolo" was elected as the district Commissioner of Baidoa after he had won against his rival for the post.
The voting which occurred at the meeting hall for the Somali Parliament was observed by the ministry of Interior Mr Muse Noor Amin and Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Omer Dalha.
Residents in Baidoa have warmly welcomed the election in which members of regional council of Bay region voted for the two posts, due to the council's constitution.
"The voting shows Democracy being implemented in our region" said Mohamed Madey, a resident in Baidoa speaking to InsideSomalia.org by the telephone line.
Recent months residents Bay and Bakol witnessed confrontation between government forces and insurgents, roadside bomb attacks and killing against government officials.
The newly elected regional governor and district commissioner vowed contain security and peace in the region and adopt development schemes, as said by local reporter in Baidoa.
Somalia has lacked a central united government since 1991 when the military regime of General Mohamed Siyad Barre was ousted by Alliance of factional groups who later fought against each other before the Transitional Federal Government was established in 2004 in Kenya after two year long of National Reconciliation Conference in Nairobi.
